The first steps in creating mantel clocks were found in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. They were created of iron and were wound with the help of weight. The very first mantel clocks were similar to tower clocks. They had the similar layout and components.

In the Middle ages persons applied walls' consoles where clocks were situated. Centuries later timber corbel became the element of the clocks' body. The style of it conformed to the entire style of the clock. Room clocks played an important role in the decoration of a room. Every house stuck to the trend that was fashionable during the epoch and a clock was a part of the whole design ensemble of the apartments. A few centuries later appeared professional clockmakers. They tried to give beautiful appearance to every clock they made. We can signify such remarkable persons as Roentgen, Goutier and Benemann. Their clocks were definitely marvelous and there were no analogs in the world. In the eighteenth century appeared clock masters that began to make copies from the most marvelous clocks they saw.
