The Overview of Brass Musical Instruments

Ancient peoples applied brass to produce this type of instruments and that is why the notion “brass” appeared and is still applied nowadays. Today people also get to use copper and silver in the production of brass musical instruments. Brass instruments consist of modern French horn, tuba, cornet, trombone, trumpet and flugelhorn.

Such instruments might only play natural scale sounds because at those times there weren't valve mechanisms in them. Timbres of sounds were changed with the help of the lips of a performer. All martial and hunting fanfares and signals appeared at those times. The natural scale was the basis of these sounds and people began to apply them in musical practice.

When a technique of metal working and metal products producing became better, it has become feasible to create tubes for wind instruments of definite sizes and finishing. The term “natural instruments” appeared with the progress of brass instruments producing and the improvement of various natural scales. They were the instruments without any gear and could produce only natural scale. Guilds of trumpet-players appeared at those times. At that time 2 guilds of trumpeters dwelled: martial trumpeters who sounded martial hymns and chambers trumpeters that played in castles.

At the beginning of the XIX century was invented valve mechanism. It definitely changed the art of playing and heightened the possibility of brass instruments. The principle of that gear was in including the crown in the basic tube. It transformed the form of instruments and the pitch was lowered.
