Quasi-conductors are considered to be a special class of chemical elements. Scientists got known about such substances in the end of the 19th century, but just in the 20th century scientists managed to get more knowledge about them. In 1923 Russian physicists proved the ability of usage of semiconductor-metal contacts to accelerate the generation of fluctuations. There was no possibility to develop some unique devices as diodes. First transistor was created in Bell's laboratory in 1949. This event influenced the fast improvement of semiconductor devices. The intensive studying of the features of semiconductors was begun at the same time.

The concern to optical features of semiconductors revived due to research of induced emission in semiconductors. It caused the creation of semiconductor laser device based on utilizing of p - n barriers and then on heterojunction.
